The Best Places to Elope in Victoria: A Guide for Nature-Loving Couples

Dreaming of exchanging vows somewhere a little wild, a little romantic, and completely your own? From hidden waterfalls and misty forests to rugged mountain ranges and windswept coastlines, Victoria has some beautiful places for couples who want their wedding day to feel like an adventure.

There is something pretty special about the idea of getting married surrounded by nature.

No ballroom full of people. No pressure to follow a hundred traditions just because they're expected. Just the two of you, the people who matter most, and a place that makes you stop for a second and think, how is this real life?

Maybe you're dreaming of exchanging vows beneath towering trees, sharing a quiet moment beside a waterfall, or watching the last of the afternoon light spill across the mountains.

Whatever your version of an elopement looks like, Victoria has a beautiful mix of landscapes to explore.

As a Melbourne photographer with a deep love for the outdoors, regional Australia and the stories that make us feel something, I love the idea of couples choosing a place that feels like them.

So, if you're planning an intimate wedding or elopement and have absolutely no idea where to start looking, grab a snack. Let's explore some of Victoria's most beautiful regions to consider.

1. Paradise Falls, Victorian High Country

Best for: Couples dreaming of a dramatic landscape, a waterfall, lush greenery and a little adventure.

If moody forests, towering rock formations and the sound of falling water sound like your kind of wedding day, Paradise Falls deserves a spot on your inspiration list.

Located within Alpine National Park in Victoria's High Country, Paradise Falls is surrounded by rugged natural scenery. The waterfall drops approximately 31 metres over a striking rock formation, with a walking track leading from the car park to the viewing platform.

The falls are particularly impressive in spring after rainfall, making this a beautiful region to consider if you're drawn to a landscape that feels a little wild and cinematic.

A little inspiration from behind my camera

I recently photographed an elopement shoot at Paradise Falls, and honestly, it was one of those settings that makes you want to slow down and take it all in. This day changed my whole view on what I want my business to be too, I’m involve.

We had the forest, the earthy tones, the dramatic rock face and the most beautiful atmosphere for creating something romantic and a little moody.

The couple exchanged vows with books in hand, surrounded by the sounds and textures of the forest. The rain and soft light added another layer of atmosphere, creating the kind of imagery that feels like a scene from a film rather than a perfectly polished production.

It's a reminder that your elopement doesn't need sunshine and blue skies to be beautiful. Sometimes the unexpected weather becomes part of the story. Best part about paradise falls is most of it is under the rocks so rain or shine you can stay dry.

Also rain can make the waterfall especially beautiful, but wet tracks and slippery surfaces need to be taken seriously.

2. The Macedon Ranges

Best for: Romantic countryside, forest backdrops and intimate celebrations close to Melbourne.

If you love the idea of escaping the city without travelling too far, the Macedon Ranges are a beautiful place to begin your search.

Think winding country roads, towering trees, rolling hills and little pockets of greenery that feel worlds away from everyday life.

This region lends itself beautifully to intimate weddings, particularly if you're drawn to a relaxed country atmosphere with a touch of romance.

You could plan a ceremony at a suitable private property or wedding venue, then spend some time exploring the surrounding countryside for portraits.

The best part? You don't necessarily need an elaborate setup. A beautiful location, meaningful vows and the freedom to enjoy the day together can be more than enough.

3. The Mornington Peninsula

Best for: Ocean-loving couples, windswept portraits and a relaxed coastal atmosphere.

There's something about the coast that makes a wedding day feel romantic.

The Mornington Peninsula offers beaches, coastal scenery, dramatic stretches of shoreline and plenty of opportunities to build a day around the ocean.

You could exchange vows with the sound of the waves nearby, explore the coastline for portraits, then head somewhere cosy for dinner and a glass of something lovely.

And if the wind picks up or the weather changes? That can become part of the story, too. Wind in your hair, a dress and veil.

One of my favourite elopement shoots was on the rolling hills in flinders with the beach as the backdrop.

4. The Great Ocean Road

Best for: Coastal adventures, dramatic ocean views and couples who don't mind getting a little windswept.

If you're dreaming of an elopement with a little more adventure, the Great Ocean Road offers a stunning stretch of Victorian coastline to explore.

From rugged cliffs to sandy beaches and ocean views, there are plenty of different landscapes to consider when planning your day.

You could make an entire weekend of it, you can go from beach side to cinematic waterfalls surrounded by stunning grand forests its all on the one road!

The only downside with some of these destinations is they are very popular tourist attractions, so this one does take a lot of planning and sometimes waiting your turn for the best shot.

So, how do you choose the right place to elope?

With so many beautiful locations across Victoria, it can be tempting to choose the one that looks the most impressive in photographs.

But I'd encourage you to think about how you want your day to feel, too.

Ask yourselves:

Do we want adventure or a slower, more relaxed day?

Are you happy walking along uneven tracks in your wedding clothes, or would you prefer somewhere with easy access and a beautiful view?

Do we picture ourselves in the forest, the mountains or beside the ocean?

Start with the landscapes you naturally gravitate towards. The right setting is often the one that feels most like you.

Are we inviting guests?

A location that's perfect for two people may be less suitable if you're bringing family members who need accessible paths, seating or nearby facilities.

What happens if the weather changes?

Victoria can be unpredictable. Choose a location and a plan that allow you to enjoy the day safely, even when the forecast has other ideas.

Your elopement doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful

I think there's something really special about choosing a wedding day that gives you room to breathe.

Time to be present. Time to laugh when things don't go exactly to plan. Time to hold each other a little longer without feeling like you need to rush off to the next thing.

That's the kind of experience I want for my couples.

My approach to photography is cinematic and story-driven, with gentle prompts to help you feel comfortable in front of the camera. I'll guide you when you need it, throw in a questionable dad joke when the nerves kick in, and give you space to just be yourselves when the real magic unfolds.

The photographs should feel like your story, not a performance.
